The Holy Spirit is God, an equal member of the Trinity with God the Father and God the Son (Matt 28:19), shares all the same qualities: eternal, omnipotent, omnipresent, sovereign, and has self-existed since the beginning, playing a part in Creation. And yet, many of us consider Him to be the most mysterious, least understood and most “ethereal”.
But Scripture tells us that the Holy Spirit is a person, which means He is personal. His work is to freely fill with wisdom those who desire His presence. Some Biblical examples are:
His inspiration of the human writers of Scripture to record God’s Words so the world may come to know and trust Him (2 Tim 3:16-17).
His divine overshadowing of Mary so even though a virgin, she would give birth to Jesus (Luke 1:35). How uniquely personal.
His appearance at Pentecost as a pillar of fire that then separated into individual tongues onto each of the disciples to anoint and commission them with their holy calling. Their mission was the same (Acts 1:8) but each disciple was called to a unique path on that mission journey. Peter was called to preach mainly to the Jews, Paul to the Gentiles.
And what about us, today?
When we accept Jesus as our Savior, the Spirit comes to live inside of us (1 Cor 3:16). You can’t get more personal than that! He convicts, sanctifies and secures us in Christ for eternity and is essential in our conversion (John 3:5-7). He gives each of us a unique and personal testimony.
The Spirit guides us in our unique circumstances, knows our hearts, prays on our behalf and enables us to conquer sin. He unites us with Christ and believers in the Church, gives us spiritual gifts which best suit us individually for service (1Cor 12:4- 11) and as we obey, grants us a fruitful life (Gal 5:22-23).
God created each human being uniquely and the Spirit works to fit each person to their unique calling. He sees us, searches us, hovers overs us, invests in us and calls us by name. His relationship with us and work in us is very personal: to transforms each one of us to become like the Son, to the delight of the Father. His desire is to fill us with all He is.
Let’s let Him!
